Plating types

Sn_product

(Sn) Tin plating

  • Characteristic : Tin plating is widely used in electronic components because it provides excellent solder ability in the assembly process.
  • Application : Tin is a soft, malleable, ductile metal with high silvery-white crystals. Tin melts at about 232 °C (450 °F), which is almost the same as lead (327.5 °C),so it is used as a replacement for lead in the form of an alloy (Sn/Ag/Cu alloy called M705) and is also used to coat other metals to prevent rust and tarnish.
  • Plating example by METEK : Tin planting on bare materials (material before stamping electronic components) It can also be plated in plating tanks or hangers for small workpieces such as connectors, chips, commutators, etc. Full surface and partial plating Semiconductors such as ICs and LSIs
  • Bits of knowledge : Humans have known and used tin for thousands of years. Since ancient civilizations, it has been used to make tools and various decorations. One of the most common uses of tin is in alloys such as bronze (tin and copper) and soldering.

(Ag) Silver plating

  • Characteristic : Silver is widely used in electronic components because it has the best electrical conductivity among metals. It is also used for decoration. Shiny silver plating is also used as a reflector for LEDs because it can reflect almost 100% of the visible light.
  • Application : Used for decorative plating such as coating on jewelry, tableware, electronic components such as connectors, circuit boards and LED cartridges, metal cartridges, medical devices, optical devices, etc.
  • Plating example by METEK : A variety of silver plating shades to suit the application. Full surface plating on thermal fuses and electrical contacts and semiconductors and electronic components.
  • Bits of knowledge : The same type of silver plating, the gloss, reflectivity, hardness, etc., vary depending on the plating method and the substances contained in the plating.

(Cu) Copper plating

  • Characteristic : Copper is not very commonly used for decoration because copper changes color easily (copper has a dark color due to oxidation and impurities), but copper is very important in the electronics industry because it has good electrical and heat conductivity, so it is often used in electrical appliances that we are familiar with. Copper also has dispersion properties and has some strength and corrosion resistance.
  • Application : Used for primer plating before plating other metals, plating printed circuit boards, manufacturing of copper sheets.
  • Plating example by METEK : Copper plating service on bare materials (material before stamping electronic parts) and this layer is used as a bottom layer for other metals and as a top surface.
  • Bits of knowledge : plating on iron or other metal surfaces not only increases the electrical conductivity of the metal, but also serves as a barrier between the material layer and the top layer for better adhesion.

Ni_product

(Ni) Nickel plating

  • Characteristic : Nickel has excellent corrosion resistance and is hard and tough. Nickel plating is used in various applications because it can directly bond to various metals, whether it is electroplated or electroless. Many types of nickel plating can be coated and the properties meet the purpose, such as corrosion resistance, strength and appearance. The appearance is glossy, matte and semi-glossy nickel plating, which are shades that MKT supports.
  • Application : Used as a base coat to prevent the spread of metal materials to electronic components, such as contacts and terminals. Plating on sliding parts to improve heat and wear resistance.
  • Plating example by METEK : Plating services for various materials Electrical terminals, relays, etc.
  • Bits of knowledge : Nickel is a rare metal. Currently, it is not widely used in the plating industry. In addition, nickel is an important component in rechargeable batteries, especially nickel cadmium (NiCd) and nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries used in electronic devices and electric vehicles.
